This fall weather is amazing. It was nice to leave for an appointment a couple of hours early and steal a bit of time at the lake. Click on pictures to enlarge.

One of the great things about fall is just sitting in the yard watching. We are fortunate to be in an area where we not only have many animals living around us, but many flying over on their way to the Wakarusa Wetlands or the Kansas River. During migration time, it is not unusual to see hundreds of flybys by geese, gulls, nighthawks, and other birds. Seeing all the Monarchs, dragonflies, and other butterflies is amazing. A couple of weeks ago, I was watching a huge number of coots moving about at Clinton Lake. I also noticed quite a few gulls flying about. There was a lot of splashing going on, then I realized they were not all just hanging out together. The gulls were actually dive-bombing the coots and taking their fish away. I think there are more gulls here right now than people. They outnumber us, and that’s a good thing. More pelican pics later. 🙂 Click on pictures to enlarge.

The lake is frozen, so everyone is hanging out below the dam. Zoom in on the trees and count the bald eagles. I saw at least twenty in the short time I was out there this morning. Very cool. Click on pictures to enlarge.
The amount and diversity of gulls coming in right now is staggering. They are amazing to watch. We humans are delightfully outnumbered. Click on pictures to enlarge.
