Fawns!

It’s always a treat to get to see fawns with their parents. I usually do not see many still with their spots. Click on pictures to enlarge.

It’s beginning to look a lot like winter

While I haven’t been out as much as I would like, I love seeing the arrival of our wintering friends. Bald eagles from the north are beginning to arrive and the harriers seem to be swooping low over fields everywhere I look. I saw my first group of common goldeneyes last week (there is definitely nothing common about them; they are beautiful). Young deer are looking much more grownup than a few months ago. Nice morning

This fall weather is amazing. It was nice to leave for an appointment a couple of hours early and steal a bit of time at the lake. Click on pictures to enlarge.

Coyotes and deer

I pulled over to watch some deer last week and noticed immediately how on edge they were. Though I wasn’t really all that close, I thought they were disturbed by me, so I started to go on. I looked on the other side of the road before pulling away and there were two coyotes watching the deer. I was right in the middle. I suppose that worked out well for the deer as they moved on after the coyotes took off in the other direction. It happened so fast that I really didn’t have time to compose the best pictures, but it certainly was exciting. Click on pictures to enlarge.

R-e-s-p-e-c-t

One of the things I love about my walks in the Wakarusa Wetlands at this time of year is how often I am the only human there. It gives me the opportunity to stay still and get wonderful pictures without someone coming along and unknowingly scaring off my subjects. There are times when my presence is definitely not welcomed. I watched this buck for a while as he foraged along. He seemed to be really enjoying himself and I certainly loved watching him.  I was never in any danger, but he did snort a bit and do a few foot stomps before taking off. Isn’t he lovely!

Save it. Don’t pave it. Click on picture to enlarge.

Doe, a deer

It seems like it ought to be easier to think of clever blog post titles, but  alas… Now that I have the Sound of Music soundtrack firmly stuck in my brain for the next few days, back to our regularly scheduled programming. From what I could observe, I think these two beauties are a mother and adolescent. Click on picture to enlarge.
