It was a frosty morning at the wetlands, but the sun quickly warmed things up. A bald eagle was enjoying the sunrise, a Cooper’s hawk was hanging out, and the male wood duck was patrolling while his mate was investigating the nest box. I can’t wait to see the baby wood ducks!

When I visited last week, there was not a lot of water. I so hope that has changed a bit by now. I have my suspicions that water is being diverted from portions of the Wetlands targeted for destruction to build the SLT. I know it has been a dry, hot summer, but it has never looked like this. This area is usually completely covered by water.
Water birds
There is something about the name “waterfowl” that bothers me. I think it stems from someone telling me once that “fowl don’t feel.” So this spring, while everyone is talking about the spring migration of waterfowl coming through, I’ll be using a little different language.
