More Wakarusa Wetlands magic

Little specks of yellow dot the fields and the green is lush and fragrant. Dragonflies are everywhere. Thousands of voices sing. On this morning, I spotted deer, a host of blackbirds, grackles, robins, sparrows, catbirds, indigo buntings, painted buntings, northern cardinals, goldfinches, a huge diversity of frogs, a dickcissel singing loudly, wood ducks, turtles (snappers and painted), geese, great egrets, great blue herons, cattle egrets, little blue herons, mink, muskrats, and the hundreds more. Rain, sleet, and snow

A great way to help birds this winter is to create a brush pile. It’s a good place to keep warm and hide from predators.

Nuthatches seem to do pretty much everything upside down.

Yesterday was the first time it’s been warm enough to see a lot of frogs and insects. I also saw what I think is a prairie crayfish. I think my father would have called him/her a “crawdaddy.” Click on pictures to enlarge.

It is such a pleasure to sit in my office and watch the diversity of visitors to the yard. One of the best spots for taking pictures is crouched between the back of the car and the garage. More than one neighbor has done a double take when seeing me sitting on the ground behind the car. Hopefully, they see the camera and don’t think I am too crazy, but I guess I don’t really mind being the crazy neighbor. 🙂 Click on pictures to enlarge.

More backyard residents

It’s been wonderful watching the progress of all the families living in and around our backyard. I think we have a catbird pair building a nest back there now. I watched one come flying in carrying nest materials, including a plastic bag. I wish people would think about the consequences of throwing their garbage every which way.
