It’s been wonderful watching the progress of all the families living in and around our backyard. I think we have a catbird pair building a nest back there now. I watched one come flying in carrying nest materials, including a plastic bag. I wish people would think about the consequences of throwing their garbage every which way. We now have robins, mourning doves, cardinals, starlings, house finches, and probably house sparrows all nesting in and around our backyard. I strongly suspect we may also have a brown thrasher nest somewhere back there as I saw them gathering nest materials. We have a row of trees, bushes, and brush along the back fence that we are trying to keep bird friendly. It seems to be working so far. Click on pictures to enlarge.
We spotted this nest a while back. It’s pretty far back from the road and won’t be visible for much longer as the trees become fuller. This morning I was able to get a much better view from a different approach. I should note that I always stay very far back so as not to disturb them. Click on picture to enlarge.
When I visited the nest this morning, there was a juvenile eagle on a tree nearby. One of the parents was calling out and seemed very disturbed. I assumed he/she was calling for the other to come and run off the intruder. I didn’t see the eaglet and was a bit worried. I hoped she/he was keeping his/her head down in case of trouble (I’ve seen the young ones do this when the parents seem agitated). So, we went back later this afternoon. Not only was everything fine, we discovered there are two eaglets in the nest! Click on pictures to enlarge.
